Ship's Log June 28-July 7th 2019

Too Early

This year my deckhand is Travis Lively. That last name says a lot. He and I were working together during Dungeness fishing on the Brandy and Travis performed excellent during that season and I was pretty happy to have him join me on this year's adventures. Seanna was a constant onboard presence as well.

We began boatwork on June 14th. I had in mind the basics. Get both engines running (they had new oil, filters, etc from proper winterizing previous season end), get refrigeration system up and running, and all electronics checked out. Add subscriptions to Sirius Satellite for weather, and music/entertainment, etc.

Engines started up and ran fine. Refrigeration system needed work so we called Refer guy to solve the problems and get that system in check. Then we needed the electronics guy because the radar was not responding. He came and got that in check.

On June 28th at 2:30pm Travis, Seanna, and I went to sea with supplies for up to 25 days. We got into the fishing zone June 29, and got 20 nice big fish once we got there late in the afternoon. We went to bed after a nice big dinner about 1030pm with big hopes for tomorrow.

June 30th we trolled all day for 5 fish that we caught all at once during some random time that day.

July 1 we headed further out, worked all day and got 2 fish.

Never any pattern, the next day we found ourselves beyond the US economic zone. (200 miles)... and we got 11 that day.

Well shit. Not real happy times, feeling like I definitely jumped the gun a bit here. Should have stayed in and done more boatwork perhaps? Maybe I should have changed out the Genset. After all I have the new genset in the shop at home. All this and much more revolving in my mind as I grind out day after day of not gettin um. Travis and Seanna's attitudes were very good during the entire trip. Mine was pretty sullen.

This trip ended July 7th by arriving into Winchester Bay at 11:30 pm with 890 pounds of fish to sell. I was never excited enough to take any pictures during this trip. Except a couple boats like the one shown of the Sunset Charge, and my fishing partner boat during this trip, the Julia C.
